TRO Looking For A New Meeting Place
Due to changes at Tally's Cafe, we are looking for a new location for our meetings.  Last month we tried out the Mazzio’s at The Farm Shopping Center, 51st & Sheridan.  We also started the Bring-A-Friend Contest that night.  For more details on that, see the additional Featured Item.
The new location does not have to be an eatin' place, and if not, it should be close to at least one good restaurant.  For a restaurant to work, it must have a separate room that isolates us from the noise of other customers, is centrally located in Tulsa, and should be able to handle 2 to 3 dozen people.  If anyone knows of a suitable location, please contact me or any TRO officer with details.

TRO Bring-A-Friend Contest  SEP to DEC 2016
To help promote the club, we are having a Bring-A-Friend Contest through the months of September to December.  The TRO member who brings the most friends over that period will win a prize package consisting of a Yaesu FT-60R HT with an aftermarket antenna and a speaker mic.
All you have to do is show up, bring a friend (or two, or three, or four, or...), sign in, and make sure your friend signs in.  Secretary Doug Lee, KC5ZQM will keep track of the numbers from the sign in sheets.  The winner will receive the prize at the Christmas Party / December meeting.
We prefer that you bring potential members, such as hams or soon-to-be hams.
UPDATE: One member did bring a friend to the September meeting.  A slow start, but let’s see if we can get things to pick up a bit!

What's On The Program?
In order to make our meetings more fun, interesting, and useful for our members, the Executive Committee has decided to get back to having programs every month.  But we need your help.  Do you have an idea for a program?  If so, let us know!
Are your curious about some aspect of ham radio, and would like to see a program on the topic?  Let us know!
You don't have to put on the program, but if you are able and willing to do so, that would be great!  Just tell us your idea, and we will work on putting it together.
The programs don't have to be about ham radio.  Hams tend to be technical people, so anything technical or scientific will do.
By the way, we used to tour a TV or broadcast radio station, or the Tulsa EOC, or the NWS Office once a year, but we haven't done that in about a decade.  Let us know if you would like to go on such a tour, and where.
Send you ideas to TRO Vice President Paul Young at ke5ehm@tulsahamradio.org.

MARS / Amateur Radio Interoperability Exercise
From 30 OCT through 01 NOV, members of the Military Auxiliary Radio System will conduct a quarterly Department of Defense Contingency Communications exercise.  The purpose of this exercise is train on our ability to provide communications following a “very bad day” scenario when traditional forms of communications will likely be unavailable.  While the simultaneous loss of all communications nationwide is not likely, for training purposes, we are assuming there has been a massive nation-wide outage.
One of the objectives of this exercise is to continue the partnership with the amateur radio community to help provide information about local conditions and send this information to the Department of Defense to help understand what is happening around the United States.
During this exercise, we will use 60 meters, local VHF and UHF repeaters as well as HF NVIS amateur radio bands.  Our goal is to have a conversation about the local conditions in and around your county.  During the conversation, our operators will be asking basic questions such as the status of commercial power, public water systems, and road conditions.  These will be person to person conversations  - you don’t need to use any digital modes or know any special messaging formats.
To kick off this exercise, we are encouraging the amateur radio community to monitor 5330.5 KHz from 0300-0400 Hrs Zulu on 31 OCT.  During this hour, we will be doing a high power voice broadcast from a military station on the east coast and alternate with a voice broadcast from the west coast.  Amateur radio operators are encouraged to submit a reception report as indicated in the voice broadcast.
For the remainder of the exercise, MARS personnel will be calling for amateur radio operators on the 60 meter channels as well as using already established amateur radio nets on HF NVIS and VHF/UHF repeaters.
Amateur radio operators are also invited to attend the ARRL webinar scheduled for 25 OCT at 2000 hrs Eastern Time where Dave Stapchuk, Chief AF MARS, and the Army MARS Program Manager will give a presentation about the MARS program.  Please register for the webinar at:

If you have further questions about this exercise, please email: mars.exercises@gmail.com.
