Weather On The Web #5

Last week, I talked about weather apps for smartphones.

This week, I’ll look at websites for forecast models.

Before I say anything about websites, I need to take a quick look at the different models. I am not a meteorologist or veteran storm chaser, just a spotter, so I am not expert on models. I won’t be going into detail on the models, but I will tell what I have gleaned from reading Hazardous Weather and Convective Outlooks, and Mesoscale Discussions. I hope I give you enough that you can start exploring the models for yourself.

The 3 models I seen mentioned the most are the NAM, the GFS, and the ECMWF (also called the Euro). These are not the only ones, just the ones most talked about, especially when it comes to severe or winter weather.

The NAM and GFS are run by the National Weather Service every 6 hours at 0z (0000 UTC), 06z, 12z, and 18z. The 0z and 12z runs use surface and radiosonde (balloon) observations, the others use only surface data. The NAM goes out only 3 – 4 days, but the GFS goes out to 10 days. Any forecast beyond 4 or 5 days tends to be unreliable on details and specifics, even though they show might show a system moving through a certain area in the extended forecast, As the event gets closer, the details about the exact track of the system, its strength, and other details become clearer, especially when the models agree with each other.

The models will forecast different parameters (temperature, humidity, wind speed, etc.) at different levels in the atmosphere. These levels are given not as distances from the ground, but as barometric pressure.

The one model website I have bookmarked is the Penn State Electronic Map Wall: http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~fxg1/ewall.html. It seems to offer easy access to the model graphics from the front page.

Other popular sites that I have seen others refer to include:

Unisys Weather: http://weather.unisys.com/ecmwf/index.php

College of Du Page: http://weather.cod.edu/forecast/

Twister Data: http://www.twisterdata.com/

I believe I have exhausted this subject, so this entry is the last one about it.

Request For Feedback

For the Bulletin to continue to be the useful tool I intend it to be, I need your feedback. I need to know of any items that I should add, remove or change. I will consider all suggestions.

Plus any comments about the quality or the handling of the Bulletin will be appreciated.

Please send any comments, corrections, additions, etc., to kc5zqm@cox.net. DO NOT send them as a reply to the WA5LVT Yahoogroup, unless you want the entire group to see them before I have a chance to review them.
