Weather On The Web #2
Last week, I talked about how weather is the greatest common denominator of human experience, and is often a dominant interest of radio amateurs. Because so many websites offer weather information many people could have a problem determining where to start. To help people get started I decided to discuss those websites I use. I briefly covered the Eastern Oklahoma Northwest Arkansas Skywarn and the Tulsa National Weather Service Office websites: http://www.okarkskywarn.org/index.asp, www.weather.gov/tulsa. This week I will look more detail about the severe weather information available at the Tulsa NWS website.
Most of the severe or hazardous weather information can be found at their Decision Support Page. You can find a button to that page at the right end of the row of buttons above the map on the front page. The direct link is: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tsa/dsp/dsp.php.
Once you go to this page, you will see why it is also called the “Chiclets” page. The two largest features on the page are the Graphic Hazardous Weather Outlook, and above that is a grid of buttons that resemble Chiclets gum. The color of each Chiclet indicates the level of its particular threat for the day shown at the top of each column.
To the right of the Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook, you will find two smaller images. These images are maps shaded to show the location and level of particular threats could occur. If you want to enlarge one of these images, click on it. That image will change places with the GHWO.
Above these images on the right sits a set of buttons that give you access to more information, some of which comes from other websites. One of those buttons is usually grayed out most of the time. It says, “Briefing.” When the Tulsa NWS expects threatening weather in its forecast area within the next day or so, they will prepare a multimedia briefing that includes graphics and a voice over explanation of the graphics.
To learn more about the Decision Support page, look at the gray box to the
right of the Chiclets grid. It has a link to a tutorial.
Next week, I’ll look at the Storm Prediction Center’s website..
