Weather On The Web #1

Weather is the greatest common denominator of human experience, and is often a dominant interest of radio amateurs. Weather affects radio propagation, antennas, and sometimes creates the disasters that cause us to leave our safe and comfortable homes to go help those who are left homeless, injured, or sick by storms.

Because weather is such a dominant force in our lives, it is also a popular subject on the Internet. A Google search on weather renders 1,180,000,000 results!

So many websites offer weather information that many people could have a problem determining where to start. You might already have your favorite sites bookmarked, but for those who have yet to get started exploring weather on the Web, I will discuss those websites I use.

First of all, if you are a storm spotter in the area served by the Tulsa National Weather Service office, and you have not yet signed up at http://www.okarkskywarn.org/index.asp, do it as soon as you can. There you can sign up to receive email notifications of sever weather watches, warnings and other forecast products. The headline banner on that website also gives you a quick assessment of severe weather potential for the day.

I also recommend that you check out the website for your local NWS office. In the Tulsa area, the easiest address is www.weather.gov/tulsa. If you don’t know where your NWS office is located, go to http://www.weather.gov/, and click on your location.

Next week, I’ll go into more detail about the severe weather information available at the Tulsa NWS website.

How’s Your Health?

This might seem like a personal question to ask in this forum, but I have a reason for asking. I am not the only one facing health issues that have or could affect my ability to get out and help with public service events, emergencies and disasters. When discussing emergency preparations for radio hams, we often focus on equipment and training. However, you can have a million dollar station and training equivalent to a PHD, but if you can’t walk to the end of your driveway without coughing up a body organ, your station and training won’t do anyone much good.

So, how IS you health? You don’t owe me an answer, but you do owe it to yourself.

Request For Feedback

For the Bulletin to continue to be the useful tool I intend it to be, I need your feedback. I need to know of any items that I should add, remove or change. I will consider all suggestions.
Plus any comments about the quality or the handling of the Bulletin will be appreciated.
Please send any comments, corrections, additions, etc., to kc5zqm@cox.net. DO NOT send them as a reply to the WA5LVT Yahoogroup, unless you want the entire group to see them before I have a chance to review them.
