Bike MS Oklahoma, September 15 & 16, 2012
The Bike MS Oklahoma ride goes from downtown Tulsa to the State Capitol in Oklahoma City, with an overnight stay in Chnadler OK.
SAG's and stationary operators needed.  Additional Net Controls might also be needed.  Gas will be reimbursed, and supper will be provided Saturday night.  Use of APRS is highly recommended for SAG's.
The frequency plan currently includes the 146.88 repeater (141.3 PL), with the TARC UHf Linked System (443.850, 88.5 PL) as a backup, for the first half of Day 1; the 147.36 Chandler repeater for the 2nd half; then the 147.03 Edmond repeater for Day 2, with the Chandler repeater as a backup.
To volunteer, contact Tom Stroud, KD5OPH at KD5OPH@tulsahamradio.org, or call 918-695-3735.

Boy Scout Festival,  22 SEP 12
The Boy Scout Fall Festival is a one day event at Camp Russell in Broken Arrow.  Two operators are needed to demonstrate amateur radio to the Scouts.  One should be a General or Extra class so you have more HF frequency capabilities. Bart Pickens, N5TWB and Ben Joplin, WB5VST expressed an interest in working this event, at the last TRO meeting. They might even take along the ARES Go-Kit radio used at Field Day for the GOTA station.  The event is from 1000 to 1500 (10 AM to 3 PM), so set up should probably begin around 0900.  To volunteer, contact Tom Stroud, KD5OPH at KD5OPH@tulsahamradio.org, or call 918-695-3735.

Microbursts and Warnings
I was planning on writing about the second storm season of the year that usually happens in September & October, but the deaths caused by microbursts last Friday have caused me to narrow my focus a bit.
As far as I know, the National Weather Service does not issue warnings for microbursts because they are very hard to predict, they happen very suddenly, and they don't last long.  In the time the NWS could get a warning out to the public, a microburst will have done its damage, and dissipated.  But as we have seen, these events can not only be damaging, but fatal as well.
I'm not sure of what could be done, but I do have a couple of thoughts.
First, NWS and media meteorologists could issue some kind of general advisory message informing the public about the possibility of downburst events with any storm, that people should watch any storm in their vicinity, and not to wait for an official warning message or siren before moving to take shelter.  At the very least, include this advisory in the regular forecasts, if not as a separate product.
Second, as trained storm spotters, when we discuss severe weather with family, friends or acquaintances, we can tell them to watch the storms that happen around them and to be ready to act without first receiving an official warning.
