Hurricane Irene EmComm Case Study
Hurricane Irene struck North Carolina last summer before moving back out to sea and then moving up the coast to strike New Hampshire and Vermont. The DHS Office of Emergency Communications has produced an case study of the communications respose in North Carolina. Amateur radio filled an important gap when the state's 800MHz system became unreliable for a while. A copy of the 2-page case study can be found here: http://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/USDHS/2012/08/16/file_attachments/150291/Case%2BStudy_Hurricane%2BIrene_Final-2012.pdf
Ham Radio Is A Hobby, But...
We often find ourselves in serious situations in our public service, storm spotting, emergency and disaster activities. Sometimes the stress can have an unwanted effect on our functionality, and sometimes people can be overwhelmed. Recent comments in the ARES E-Letter show the impact of stress on emergency responders, including hams: http://www.arrl.org/ares-el?issue=2012-08-15#toc07.
In the stressful situations that I have been in as an emergency management volunteer and amateur radio operator, what I have found that helps me the most is to concentrate on what I need to do at the moment. The only way to know that is through training, both classroom and hands-on. That's why PUBLIC SERVICE EVENTS & TRAINING are a major emphasis of this publication.
In addition to training, I can heartily recommend prayer, meditation and spending time with family and friends.

Plus any comments about the quality or the handling of the Bulletin will be appreciated.

Please send any comments, corrections, additions, etc., to kc5zqm@cox.net. DO NOT send them as a reply to the WA5LVT Yahoogroup, unless you want the entire group to see them before I have a chance to review them.
