Internet Resources Continued

The value of the Internet is that it is not just a resource, but a resource of resources.
Some hams see it as a competitor for new users.  But the Internet is one of the greatest resources that hams can tap into.  The problem is finding the Inrternet resources that help you the most because so many are out there.
Last week I highlighted the Big Three of ham radio Internet resources: www.arrl.org, www.qrz.com, and www.eham.net..  This week I'll cover online resources for the State of Oklahoma.
Want to know what the ARRL is doing in Oklahoma?  One of the first places to look is the Oklahoma Section News page at the ARRL website: http://www.arrl.org/sections/view/oklahoma.  Here you will find the latest Section News report by our Section Manager, Kevin O'Dell, N0IRW, plus his contact information, and a list of other ARRL officers for the State.
Next is the ARRL Oklahoma Section blog: http://arrlok.blogspot.com/.   Section Public Information Coordinator Lloyd Colston, KC5FM maintains this site.  He adds items to it as they come in.  Want to inform other hams in Oklahoma about what your club is doing?  Send Lloyd an email at: kc5fm@aol.com.
Public Service is big in ham radio in Oklahoma, and repeaters are often a part of that.  The Oklahoma Repeater Society is the state repeater coordination body, and they seek to maintain a list of ALL repeaters in the state.  You can access this list and current news relating to repeater coordination at their website: http://oklahomarepeatersociety.org/.
Interested in DXing?  Check out the Oklahoma DX Association website at: http://www.okdxa.net/.  There you can find someone to answer technical and/or operational questions, as well as news about DX events.
Next week, I'll narrow my focus a little more by looking at Oklahoma ARES resources.

More Than Radios
Well, I have to admit to something.  I left something behind at Field Day.  I ran off (drove, actually - I don't run too much nowadays) and left my fold-up camp chair at Chandler Park.
I mention this because ham radio often involves more than radios, and this is something not to overlook when making preparations for emergency and disaster communications.  The standard go-kit lists usually include things like pens, pencils, notepads, etc.  The lists include them because they will be needed in in a prolonged response to a critical situation.
When compiling your own go-kits, don't limit yourself to what the lists say.  Look around your own shack.  Do you use a particular item in your everyday operating that isn't on the lists?  Maybe you should consider including it in your kit.
When it comes to preparing a go-kit, I like to ask myself 3 questions:  What do I need to make the radio work?  (generator, antenna, feedline, etc.)  What do I need to function as an operator?  (notepad, pencil, flashlight, etc)  What do I need to function as a human being?  (auxiliary eyeballs, water, snacks, etc.)
