More Field Day Thoughts

* Even if you remember to take along sunblock, you still need to use it or reapply it every few hours.
* The only physical process in the human body that speeds up as you age is the rate at which your muscles stiffen up.
* "Even though FD is fun, it does give us a chance to see what works, what doesn't work, and how effective we could be if the power grids go down." (quote from last week's issue)  It's also a good time to find out what needs fixing!  (Ask Jay Eimer, AD5PE about the TARC tower trailer....)
* Field Day math: the probabibility of forgetting to take something is directly proportional to the amount of stuff you actually take!
* If you do consult an equipment manual, do it the geeky way - on your laptop or smartphone!
* Don't forget the duct tape!  Remember WWRGD (What Would Red Green Do).
* Even if FD doesn't turn out to be everything you expected, it's still worh all the effort as long as you had fun!

NVIS Activity Followup
Well, my little blurb about an NVIS activity in the last issue generated a few comments.  I hope it leads to more hams involved in NVIS.  Mark, N7XYO helped spread the word through the Tulsa County and Oklahoma ARES Yahoogroups.  Tnx, Mark!
I should have been more clear about what I was thinking when I mentioned the NVIS Field Day.  I wasn't thinking of NVIS activity during Field Day, but a separate Field Day-type event, and maybe even have it as part of a Simulated Emergency Test.  I did say that if anyone wanted to do an all-NVIS FD, or to experiment with NVIS during FD, they had my support.  Jay, AD5PE, attempted to do an NVIS demonstation at the TARC/TRO FD operation, but he encountered a problem with the tower trailer, so I don't know how successful it was.
After some additional thought, I have come up with the core of a plan for an activity.  We could do this as a SET, or as a separate exercise.
The plan is simple:  Each ARES Zone in Okilahoma would have at least one pre-diedignated NVIS station that will check into an HF net run from the State EOC.  After the initial roll call, the NVIS stations will move over to the 2-meter repeaters in their zone that they can access from their locations and take check-ins.  They might ask each check-in a standard poll question relating to emcomms, such as if they have a go-bag and the last time they inspected it.  The Zone stations will spend no more than 15 minutes trying to get their first check-in on each repeater before moving on, and continue taking check-ins as long as stations respond.  Once they have "polled" each repeater, they will summarize the results and report them back to the State EOC on HF.  If a Zone covers a large area, then it might have more than one NVIS station, and no more than needed to cover the repeaters.
Additional considerations: After the initial roll call of pre-designated NVIS stations, the State EOC could continue to take check-ins on HF, and these check-ins would be polled with the same question asked on the repeaters.  The exact poll question will not be told before the event starts.  The NVIS HF operators could have non-HF operators assisting them on the repeaters.
If anyone wants to keep this discussion going, please respond to the WA5LVT, Tulsa County (TCARES) and ARES Oklahoma Yahoogroups.
