Field Day 2012 Thoughts
*Field Day 2012 is next weekend. I encourage everyone who can to get out and participate.
*Once again the TRO and TARC will combine operations at Chandler Park. I like to see this cooperation between clubs, because in actual emergencies and disasters, club affiliation won't matter. What will matter is whether or not we can do the job.
*Even though FD is fun, it does give us a chance to see what works, what doesn't work, and how effective we could be if the power grids go down.
*What if FD were conducted more like an exercise or drill? What would be required then? I can see operating sites selected on the basis of their usefulness as rallying points, staging areas, command posts, etc., instead of public exposure, cookout facilities, etc. I can also see operators put on a schedule, according to bands, shifts, etc. I can also see reports consisting of something other than station class and ARRL section. Basic scenarios could be drawn up (tornado, flood, hurricane, earthquake, etc.) based on what is probable for the location, and reports could be based on the selected scenario. I can also see ICS used to organize FD operations, and post-event reports including command structure charts, traffic logs, expense reports, volunteer rosters, etc, would be funneled through ARES leadership to ARRL HQ. Finally, I can see operations based on the assumption of total failure of power and communication grids: no commercial power whatsoever, no landline or cell phone comms allowed, only RF comms on the amateur bands can be used in connection with the event.
*Of course, everything in the preceding paragraph is just speculation on my part. No one is required to implement them now, and I don't see the ARRL mandating these things in the future. But that doesn't mean that a club, ARES, or some other ham radio group couldn't use these ideas in their FD operation.
*In your preparations for FD, don't forget to practice your FD patter: CQ! CQ! CQ Field Day!
NVIS Activity?
I upgraded to General last month, but I haven't been on HF yet due to a lack of equipment. I am thinking that when I do set up an HF station, I might put up an NVIS antenna. I know Mark Conklin, N7XYO, Oklahoma Section Emergency Coordinator, promotes the use of NVIS antennas for the state ARES nets. This got me to wondering about the possibility of an NVIS-based activity, where the emphasis is on NVIS stations and operations. Stations without NVIS antennas would be allowed to participate, but they would be asked to report on how well they can hear the NVIS stations and the quality of NVIS signals they can receive. Maybe an NVIS Field Day? Maybe an NVIS SET? If anyone wishes to contribute their comments and suggestions to this discussion, please do not use the Reply button. Clipboard this paragraph into a new message to WA5LVT@yahoogroups.com with your thoughts.
