Maple Ridge 2012
TRO is once again providing communications for the Maple Ridge Memorial Day Run, on Monday, May 28..  This event is one of the shortest and most fun events on the public service calendar.  It takes place within the scenic and historic Maple Ridge Neighborhood between Peoria Avenue, Riverside Drive, 21st and 31st Streets.  A map of the route showing the assignments is available at:

To volunteer, contact Tom Stroud at KD5OPH@tulsahamradio.org, or call 918-695-3735, or sign up at the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/237833722978378/.

Tour de Cure 2012
The TRO will once again provide communications support for the Tour de Cure, a fund-raising ride for the American Diabetes Association.  The event will be Saturday, June 2, 2012, and run from 0600 (6 AM) to 1600 (4 PM).

Routes will range from 10 to 75 miles.  The map for the 75 mile route is here: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/66352892.  Links to maps for all the rides is on the event Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/274220555977254/.

A Logistics meeting will be held for all volunteers, 6 PM,  Monday, May 14th at the Warren Tower conference room.  To volunteer, contact Tom Stroud at KD5OPH@tulsahamradio.org, or call 918-695-3735, or sign up on Facebook.

Public Service Assignments
Public Service is a major focus of the Bulletin.  One of my motivations for starting this fine publication is make sure that hams in the Tulsa area have current information about Public Service Events, with the thought in mind that  this would lead to more volunteers.  Lately, many ham clubs have faced the major challenge in finding enough volunteers for PSE's.

One thing that might keep some from volunteering is a lack of knowledge what is required or involved in "working" an event.  To help remedy this, I offer a list of the types of assignments needed for a PSE, and a description of each type of assignment.

Some assignments might require only an HT, while others might require a mobile radio and possibly a suitable vehicle.

*Assignment Types
Bike Rides: Rest Stops, SAG's, Sweeps, Checkpoints & Splits, Shadow.
Foot Races: Rest Stops, Med Stations, Med Carts, Checkpoints, Shadow.

*Assignment Descriptions
Rest Stops always provide water to the riders/runners.  At a Foot Race, water might be the only thing offered.  Bike Ride Rest Stops usually provide sports drinks and snacks, especially bananas, apples, oranges, bagels and granola bars.  A bicycle mechanic could also be stationed at the stop to help with repairs, or they might stop by while patrolling the route.  Operator on duty should report when the Stop is open, the status of supplies, presence of a bike mechanic or SAG, and if any rider needs assistance that cannot be provided by the staff.

SAG's patrol the route looking for riders having trouble continuing the ride, and render assistance if possible.  Assistance could be as simple as pumping up a tire, so having a bicycle pump on board could be handy.  If the rider cannot continue, the SAG will give them a ride to the next Rest Stop or to the Start/Finish Line, as the Net Control or Ride Director directors.  This assignment requires a vehicle capable of transporting 2 or more riders and their bikes (SUV, pickup, or van).  If SAG encounters a medical emergency, they should call 911 first, then inform Net Control that 911 has been called.  Otherwise, report any riders encountered that need assistance and the nature of assistance needed and rendered.

Sweeps patrol the route the same as SAG's, but they do not have vehicles suitable for transporting riders.  If a Sweep encounters a rider needing a SAG, they should call Net Control.

Checkpoints & Splits monitor the progress of riders/runners at a designation location.  The operator might need to track the number of riders/runners.  Splits are checkpoints where different length routes separate from each other.  The operator might need to separate counts for each route.  The operator reports when the first and last riders/runners arrive, and any other problems observed.

Shadow stays with the Ride/Race Director, feeds them information from the Net, and queries the Net Control for any information the Director requests.  Serves as the primary connection between the Net and the Event Organization.

Med Stations are staffed with people trained to handle medical situations, and they could be professionals such as nurses, paramedics, or EMT's.  Sometimes such people are stationed at Rest Stops, but Med Stations are separate positions staffed only by medical personnel.  Operators at Med Stations should report on medical situations that occur.  DO NOT GIVE OUT VICTIMS' NAMES ON THE AIR!  Bib numbers or descriptions are acceptable.

Med Carts patrol the route for riders/runners needing medical assistance.  Trained medical personnel will ride with the operator.  Reporting criteria are the same as for Med Stations.  The Med Cart might have to transport the runner.
