Volunteerism in Amateur Radio Revisited

Volunteerism in Amateur Radio Revisited
Last week I wrote about how amateur radio clubs are having problems finding volunteers to work public service events. I went into the reasons why clubs provide communications support for these events. This week, I will look at how to get more volunteers.
First of all, if you have ever worked any public service event, thank you. If you are one of those who regularly gets out to work events, THANK YOU! You are the backbone of ham radio. Your participation makes it possible for clubs to continue their public service work.
Promotion is a major key that often gets overlooked when recruiting volunteers.
All too often, a club's public service officer waits until the last few weeks before the event to start recruiting. Sure, the majority of volunteers will respond within the last week, but by that time, many people who would have volunteered have already made other plans for that time. If they had earlier notice, they might have prepared for the event. Others might not be paying attention to the announcements until too late. My recommendation is to get the information out there earlier. You shouldn't need to put on a big show and dance every time you make the announcement, just keep the information in front of the potential volunteers.
And speaking of announcements, of all the available avenues to put out the announcements, how many does a club use? Most clubs have a newsletter and a weekly net, and maybe a website. What about email reflectors such as Yahoogroups, or Facebook pages, or RSS feeds?
Another major factor is recognition. People like to know that their efforts have some value when they volunteer for something. A word of thanks can go a long way, and it takes so little time to say. Thank the volunteers when they sign up, when they show up, when the job is finished, on the nets, at the next club meeting, in the newsletter, on the website, etc. People do appreciate being appreciated.

Plus any comments about the quality or the handling of the Bulletin will be appreciated.

Please send any comments, corrections, additions, etc., to
