Green Country Recap

The 2012 edition of the Green Country Hamfest is in the books, and it was another great one!  I won't go into details here about the loot I came away with, but I did okay.  Might have left behind too much money, but that's a big part of hamfest fun!
I did most of my shopping on Friday night, along with watching the front entrance for a while to give Joe Gorkos, N5TEX a chance to stretch his legs, and sitting by the TRO table when my own legs needed a rest.
Saturday saw me take in some forums.  Ed Calianese, W5SVR, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the Tulsa NWS office, gave an abbreviated version of the spotter training.  Mark Conklin, N7XYO, Section Emergency Coordinator, gave his usual presentation about ARES.  Cecil Higgins - AC0HA, a District EC from Missouri, showed how ARES operated after the Joplin tornado last spring.  His presentation really "fleshed out" some of Mark's points!
Also on Saturday, I got to win a couple of prizes, see a couple of faces I hadn't seen in years, and meet another former National Guard wireman.

Volunteerism in Amateur Radio

Something that has come up in several recent discussions is that ham radio clubs are having a harder time of finding volunteers to work public service events.  This is a real cause of concern.  Without these events, ham radio has no justification for existing.  Sure, ham radio is a fun and interesting hobby.  But it is one hobby that uses a public resource - the airwaves.  Because of this, ham radio must serve some public interest.  The FCC rules state that that public interest, first and foremost, is emergency communications.  Community events such as foot races and bike rides provide us with a chance to practice communications under conditions very similar to what could be encountered during emergencies and disasters.
I know that some cannot get out to help in these situations, but for those that can, they should.  If you have never worked any public service events, or if you haven't worked one in a long time, keep an eye on the next section in the Bulletin, and at least consider if you can help out at any of the events listed.  You don't have to do every one, but try to do at least one event a year.  You will have the thanks, not only of your humble Bulletin editor, but of the ham radio clubs, and the event sponsors.
