ARES
Volunteer
Meeting,
Zones 5 & 6,
Saturday 28
JAN 2012
Recap
On Saturday
the 28th of
January 2012
ARES leaders
held a
meeting at
the Hardesty
Regional
Library at
8316 E. 93rd
St. Tulsa,
OK. 74133
from 0900 to
1200.
Approx. 3 to
4 dozen
people
showed up.
Nathan Huffstetler, AE5NK was introduced as the interim Tulsa County Emergency Coordinator. He spoke about Rapid Response Teams in Tulsa County. Some need to be rebuilt, and some just need to be tweaked a bit.
Brian Gnad, KB5TSI, the Zone 5 District 1 EC spoke about go-bags, and even had his available as an example.
Ben Joplin, WB5VST, the Zone 5 EC talked about public service events and training. He mentioned several lessons he learned from his PSE experiences and emphasized the value of checking in to the ARES/RACES Nets.
Mark Conklin, N7XYO, the Oklahoma Section EC covered the mission, organization, and operations of ARES Oklahoma. He emphasized the value of having an ARES program in every county, the need for training, and the value of professionalism in how we present ourselves.
I have written a more in-depth article on this event. It will appear elsewhere, and I will post its location when available. I also took many pictures that will be available online somewhere soon.

Tulsa County
Skywarn
Training
The Tulsa
NWS office
has 2
Skywarn
spotter
training
sessions
scheduled
for Tulsa
County. The
first is
1900
(7PM) Tuesday,
31 JAN 12 in
Sand Springs
at the Case
Community
Center,
1050 West
Wekiwa Road.
The other
two are in
early March:
0900 (9AM),
Saturday, 05
MAR 12 at
the OU
Schusterman
Center, 41st
& Yale, and
1900 (7PM),
05 MAR 12 at
the Broken
Arrow
Community
Center. For
other
training sessions,
see the
calendar
available at
this link: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tsa/?n=spotter_training.
Looking for
a home(s)
Since the
last issue,
the TRO has
lost its
home. The
Ryan's at
21st &
Garnett
closed to
company
bankrupcy
just days
before the
TRO's
regular
meeting
date.
Fortunately,
Stan
Callahan,
KE5HPB, TRO
President,
found a
temporary
location at
the Burger
King
nearby. The
meeting room
was spacious
enough, and
we didn't
have noise
from the
rest of the
restaurant,
but
unfortunately,
it had too
much noise
from the
street. The
TRO board is
looking for
a new home
for our
meetings,
and is open
to
suggestions.
You can
forward your
suggestions
to any TRO
officer, or
the WA5LVT
yahoogroup,
or post it
on the TRO
Facebook
page if you
have a FB
profile.
Stan has
already
checked out
Tally's Cafe
at 11th &
Yale, and it
looks very
good so far.
Not only
does the TRO
need a new
home for its
meetings, we
need a new
home for the
Mid-Con
receiver for
the 146.88
repeater.
The new
owners of
the
MId-Continent
Tower have
given the
club until
the end of
February to
remove all
of its
equipment.
A work day
will have to
be scheduled
for the
removal, and
then we will
need to find
a new home
for the
receiver
package.
Again,
suggestions
are welcome,
even though
club
officers are
checking on
a few
possiblities.
